Course
How much do your masters cost?
All of our Online Master of Arts programmes cost £10,900. All our offline physical Master of Arts cost £11,830.
Can I receive government funding, even with an online masters degree?
Student Finance England (SFE) Funding is available to any UK/EU citizen who has not already studied at masters level. Students who have studied at Masters level are not currently eligible for postgraduate student funding through Student Finance England. Applicants who have received an offer can start an application for the student loan.
How long is the course? Is there an option to go part-time?
All of our courses are one year full time courses. We do not offer part-time courses but our online blended MAs are specifically geared around those who have other commitment such as full-time employment. You will have access to recorded lectures you can view when it suits you.
How many days a week will I have lectures and what are my contact hours like?
I depends on the term. In term 1, students typically have 4 classes a week, usually over 3 days but this can change during term time. During term three, this will typically be 1 day per week for 4 weeks. This equals around 55% of the total study time, the remainder being self-study, research, recording etc.
What time do the lectures start?
Any time between 10:00 and 15:00.
What are the chances of me getting a job in the industry from this masters?
We regularly share opportunities exclusive to the Tileyard community to both our students and alumni with a high percentage getting a job within the industry after they graduate. For our Music Business course, 60% of our 2022 Music Business graduates are in full-time employment! Often our business partners at Tileyard such as TALENTBANQ and Autonomy Music Group will take work experience hires from our student network and this has often ended up in full-time employment. How many students are in the classes?
We pride ourselves on our small group sizes to allow for more focus on the individual students and their learning as opposed to being lost in a big group. Some lectures will be joint lectures and there could be up to 60 students in those lectures. For studio sessions we try to keep it to 10 or less students. For modules on Songwriting/Developing Voice & Style this can be 8 at a time.
Facilities
Can I still use the facilities at Tileyard Education if I’m studying online?
The studios are not available but some weekend/evening time in the writing rooms is available to on-site and online students. We invite all online MA students to join the writing camps and evening activities we run throughout the academic year and we provide our online MA’s with a Term 3 10-day on site experience with talks, classes, writing camps and events.
What is the access to facilities like outside of teaching hours?
We operate around a 40% vacancy rate and we want students to take advantage of our writing rooms and studio during their time at Tileyard Education. Studios and writing rooms are usually open in the evening after study and weekends. We don’t have rehearsal rooms on site but there are many rehearsal rooms available in the local area for hire.
Is there the option to borrow/rent or buy gear for projects while studying?
There is a backline and instruments you can use on site but not off site and we do not rent or sell to students. There are also discount deals for gear and software via our partner providers that we offer to students and alumni.
What kind of studio and writing room facilities does Tileyard Education have? How many rooms, and what’s the gear like?
We have a fully equipped room in room studio with equipment and outboard you can see here. We have access to 7+ equipped writing rooms with Mac, mics, midi, monitors, mic, stand and interface.
Can I bring people from the outside in the studios?
The short answer is yes!
Application Process
How do I qualify to apply for a masters degree?
It depends on whether you are applying as a graduate with a degree or as someone who does not possess a degree.
With a degree – Assessment is based on application form, a further information form (received after application) and in some cases an interview.
Without a degree – Assessment is based on application form, a further information form (received after application), a work experience portfolio and academic assessment and in some cases, an interview. We send guidelines on what to expect and how to deliver each document.
I’m due to graduate this year, how does this affect my application?
Applicants should include their studies in the qualifications section of the application form. In the dates section, type the year you expect to graduate and in the title of award section, put your award (Eg. Bmus Music production) and include your projected score 9 (Eg. Projected 2:1)
How long does the application process take? What stages are within the application process?
Making an application is easy! If you have your music ready to go, you can do it in one evening. We typically take 3 weeks to reply.
I have lost my degree certificate, will you accept my final results transcript?
Applicants must submit a copy of the degree certificate. Tileyard Education will not accept a final results transcript as confirmation of degree received. The certificate must be printed on official paper carrying the University’s crest with other high levels of security (APV toner, holograms, audit numbers). It’s easy to send us a copy. Take a picture of the original on your phone or send this copy along with your application to be assessed by our applications team If you cannot locate your degree certificate, you can contact the admissions department of your University who will be able to print and send out a new one for a fee.
What does ‘recognition of prior learning’ mean?
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a method of assessment (leading to the award of credit) that considers whether a learner can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a unit through previous knowledge, understanding or skills that they have received official certification for and do not need to develop these through a course of learning.It enables the recognition of achievement from a range of activities using any valid assessment methodology. Provided that the assessment requirements of a given unit or qualification have been met, the use of RPL is acceptable for accrediting a unit, units or a whole qualification. Evidence of learning must be both valid and reliable.
How do I choose my referee?
Applicants may choose any professional referee who can validate your musical skills. This could be an academic member of staff from your undergraduate degree or any professional that you have worked with in music capacity.
