Meet Island Records & Tileyard Alumni Amar Chhina

go back

At our most recent A&R Sessions at the end of July, we caught up with one of our 2022 online Music Business masters graduates, Amar Chhina.

Since leaving Tileyard, Amar has begun working at Island Records as part of the Streaming and Commercial team. At our last A&R Sessions in July, Amar gave insights into his role at Island Records, how he got the role, and his tips for breaking into the music industry via music education. Before the event, we had the chance to catch up with him and ask him a few questions.

Perks of Studying Online

Amar chose to not do just one masters, but two at the same time. At the time, Amar was already three months into his masters at University of the West of Scotland, before enrolling into our Music Business masters (online blended).

Amar chose to do our online course alongside his on campus masters in Scotland, because it was “easier to do another online and manage time”.

The benefit of online blended study with Tileyard is the flexibility. Amar found it very useful that the classes were recorded because it meant he could watch any classes he missed due to his on-campus commitment in Scotland. To study two masters at once is no small feat, but the online option at Tileyard made it possible!

Why Tileyard Education?

Before enrolling into our course, Amar took a tour of Tileyard through one of our taster days. Amar says: “Instantly I felt a sense of community when I walked on-site”.

When chatting with Amar, he also noted that the tutors at Tileyard are “very student-first focused and very understanding of what the student needs to help them reach their goals”.

Favourite Aspects?

Amar also noted that his favourite aspect of his time studying with Tileyard was that there was “mentorship available for the students towards the end of the programme”. Head of A&R and Commercial Partnerships, Jamie Searls was Amar’s mentor and has continued that mentorship relationship since graduating too.

What’s Amar Doing Now?

After sending out more than 150 applications to different labels, Amar has landed the role as an intern in the streaming and commercial team at Island Records.

In his own words: “People think it’s getting coffee, but I do the big dog work”.

At Island Records, Amar is fully involved within his team on a level that interns in other industries generally aren’t. His main takeaway is that it is enjoyable, especially alongside other interns.
