Martyn Ware Recieves Gold Badge
After a hugely influential career in the music industry, spanning four decades, Martyn Ware has been awarded the BASCA (British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors) Gold Badge Award, which acknowledges exceptional talent in the UK music industry.
The awards (founded in 1974) take place on Monday 2nd of October at the Savoy hotel in London, with twelve individuals being celebrated for their achievements in the UK music industry. A few of the other winners include: Gary Crosby OBE, Emeli Sande MBE and Jon Webster.
Martyn Ware is a true British icon, and one of the founding fathers of British synthesised pop music, a prolific producer, technological pioneer, and the Principal of Tileyard Education. We caught up with Martyn to ask him how he feels about receiving the award. Martyn said: “I was completely gobsmacked and honoured to find out that I’d been awarded the BASCA Gold Badge. When I saw the list of previous awardees, I realised that I was in extremely illustrious company. It is particularly gratifying to receive this award from my professional peers, as I’ve always regarded myself as a bit of an outsider, but I’m very happy to recognised (hopefully) as an innovator in my field.”
Martyn was born in Sheffield in 1956, Martyn’s first job was with a computer company. This interest in technology would set him on a path that changed the face of pop music forever. He bought a synth and began to experiment with sounds that would later become the basis of his first pop group, The Human League. A few years later, in 1980, he would form Heaven 17, as well as the production company, British Electric Foundation which would lead to collaborations with Tina Turner, Sandie Shaw and Gary Glitter. He would also go on to produce Chaka Khan, Terence Trent D’Arby, Mavis Staples and many more.
In 2000, Martyn founded Illustrious Co. along side Vince Clarke and pioneered 3D surround sound technology. The company generates 3D soundscapes for a variety of clients including museums and digital artists. The company became a part of the rapidly growing community at Tileyard Studios.
From starting his career with the iconic pop group, The Human League in 1977, to pioneering cutting edge technology with Illustrious in 2000, to being awarded the prestigious BASCA Gold Badge Award in 2017, Martyn is an exceptional example of just how influential one man’s career can be.
