Prins Fimmers, MA Songwriting and Production alumnus, shares his experience at Tileyard Education and why he chooses to be involved in the community long after graduating.
Prins Fimmers, experienced songwriter and vocalist, joined Tileyard Education just as COVID-19 hit. His aim was to enhance his production skills and become part of a creative community. Reflecting on his time at Tileyard, Prins highlights the eternal value of the network of people he has been exposed to.
“Being surrounded by like-minded individuals with high aspirations throughout my course was incredibly motivating,” he says.
Commitment to Songwriting Camps
After completing his course, Prins took a brief break in music before diving back into songwriting camps. He went on to write songs in Copenhagen, Marrakesh, and London. The camps, known for signing over 250 single song agreements in 18 months, provided Prins with a unique opportunity to network with fresh faces and establish immediate bonds with fellow songwriters.
Prins admits that networking was initially a challenge for him. However, the collaborative nature of the camps helped him overcome this. He shares that, “Being put in a room with new, like-minded individuals at the camps allowed me to forge immediate connections”. These connections have led to ongoing collaborations and songwriting opportunities long after the camps ended, which has lead to growth in his own artist project.
Highlights So Far
Among the many highlights of his experience at Tileyard, Prins cherishes the access to high-quality studio spaces and to an environment that is surrounded by some of the biggest businesses in the industry. “The environment at Tileyard, where everyone is driven and passionate, is super valuable,” he reflects.
Having the opportunities to travel to other countries has been a huge benefit for him, as he elaborates what it is like to write music in an unknown environment, and to be inspired by the different cultures around you. “Writing in Marrakesh, Morocco for 4 days straight in a remote space, was a very unique experience.” he shares.
Advice for Newcomers
For those joining songwriting camps for the first time, Prins offers valuable advice: “Have an open mind and come in with clear ideas of what you want to achieve, but be sure to read the room.”
He stresses that as you are working with writers and producers from diverse backgrounds, you need to be compassionate and leave your ego behind. In his opinion, the best songs come from really listening to each other.
Current Projects and Future Aspirations
Prins is currently working on various projects, blending pop and R&B influences with hyper-pop elements. He’s collaborating with producers and writers that he’s met along the way during camps. He is also exploring sync placements and shares that, ”Tileyard is fantastic for providing these opportunities.” Each week, Tileyard Education send out live commercial briefs to both students and alumni to provide these opportunities even outside of camps.
Prins appreciates his lifelong connection with Tileyard. After graduating 3 years ago now he says, ”It’s really nice that you can always come back and work with new people, and get to know the new students. There’s always a fresh influx of talent here.”
After coming to start a new chapter of his life in London, Prins’s experience at Tileyard just goes to show the transformative power of a supportive and collaborative community.
