Tileyard Education strike a first with majority female cohort on MA Commercial Music Producer 2022

go back

In what might be a first for Higher Education nationally, Tileyard Education launched their MA Commercial Music Producer 2022 with a majority female cohort.

Since 2017, the creative technical MA Programme has stubbornly remained male dominated despite a consistent awareness and marketing drive to recruit more female producers. A recent study by USC Annenberg revealed that female producers make up just 2.6% of producers in the industry.

But this year that drive has appeared to pay off.

MA Commercial Music Producer student Renee Rain Thomas says “I love Tileyard. They have a great ethos and an all-around good vibe and I owe a lot of my success to the University. I’ve come out of my shell since applying for the course. I love just how accessible all my tutors are, how detailed my lectures and the wealth of knowledge made available.”

The news has also reached the board of Moving the Needle (MTNnow), the CIC dedicated to inspiring and educating more women in the music industry.

MTNnow Co-founder and CEO of Key Production Group, Karen Emanuel adds: “I am thrilled to hear this news, a small shift in industry dynamics represents the beginnings of huge change! Congratulations to Tileyard Education on this incredible milestone that proves the needle really is moving in the right direction!

I set up MTNnow to educate, motivate and support womxn to join the music industry and most importantly remain in it. I want to see more womxn smashing through the glass ceiling, becoming key industry players and finally correcting the long-standing gender imbalance in the industry. Womxn deserve to be at the top of their game and MTNnow is there to make it happen”.

The one year MA Commercial Music Producer, validated by University of Wales Trinity Saint David is a unique opportunity to harness the latest technical and creative production skills whilst learning from and collaborating with the extensive professional network based at Tileyard, the largest independent music community in the world.

Tileyard founder Paul Kempe also says “Tileyard has always been about the talent at the core and has consistently championed a fully inclusive community, so it’s great to see a majority-female cohort on the MA Commercial Music Producer programme and I look forward to seeing and hearing that talent take off with us.”
