Tileyard Education and Girl Grind UK joined forces this summer to create an empowering partnership that nurtures the next generation of creatives, particularly those from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.
Girl Grind UK
Under the dynamic leadership of Director and songwriter, Namywa, Girl Grind UK is an organisation committed to providing individuals with the resources they need to overcome barriers and achieve their full potential in both their personal and professional development. Through their ‘GROWNISH (12-17), WOMANISH (18-30), and PRIMEISH’ (30+) development arms, Girl Grind offers targeted programs that inspire growth and success for people of all ages.
Through award-winning projects, campaigns, and mental well-being advocacy, Girl Grind is making strides toward greater visibility and empowerment for individuals in the arts. This collaboration is an inspiring example of how industry leaders can support and empower women, girls, and gender-expanding people at pivotal stages of their career.
Empowering Individuals
The partnership with Tileyard Education brings a unique opportunity for participants to engage with industry professionals and gain invaluable insights into the music industry. The collaboration was exemplified during a networking and A&R masterclass held at Tileyard, as well as a tour of the renowned facility, and lunch at the iconic Vinyl Café.
Participants also had the chance to connect with Renée, aka: The Goddess Music, an alumnus of Tileyard and a successful DJ and producer. Renée shared her experiences and insights into navigating the music industry, followed by a helpful Q&A session. This open dialogue provided attendees with the opportunity to learn from someone who has successfully carved out a space for herself in the industry.
Masterclasses
A crucial aspect of the partnership is the focus on networking. During the masterclass, participants engaged in a networking session designed to identify and develop both their soft and hard skills. This involved sharing experiences and backgrounds in music, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among attendees.
The A&R masterclass offered further insights into the industry, focusing on representation, pitching to labels, and managing relationships for artists. The session highlighted the importance of discovering new talent and how to promote yourself as an artist. In addition, a case study of Ed Sheeran’s journey illustrated how consistent effort and genre exploration can lead to international success.
Insight from Industry Leaders
The A&R masterclass also featured a guest speaker, Wizdom Layne, Deputy Director of Sound Connections. Wizdom shared his expertise on the artist development process, offering participants a comprehensive view of what it takes to succeed in the music industry. His insights emphasised the importance of persistence, creativity, and networking in building a successful career.
