As we commemorate Black History Month, we embrace the opportunity to acknowledge the immense contributions of Black musicians, songwriters, producers, and industry professionals who have enriched the world of music.
Black history is deeply intertwined with the history of music. From blues to jazz, rock to hip-hop, Black musicians have not only shaped genres but also transformed the very essence of what music can be.
As a music community, Tileyard is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment. At Tileyard Education, we provide opportunities for emerging Black talent and support their creative journeys. Our music courses, workshops, and mentorship programs encourage aspiring artists and professionals to thrive in the industry.
This month, we took the opportunity to spotlight some of the exceptional Black talents within our community who are making waves in the music industry. From innovative producers and songwriters to emerging artists, their stories inspire us all. This all came together at our Empowering Roots event on the 24th October.
Our Empowering Roots event saw an evening of artistry and meaningful discussions. We also partnered up with The Nest and Small Green Shoots so that we could deliver an entertaining and insightful evening about the importance of Black History Month.

Some of the Small Green Shoots guests at the event included: Anjola Akeju, Rebecca Ganjeh Khosravi, and Vic Sontaro. They all spoke about challenges they have faced in the music industry, as well as how they got to where they are today. Anjola has gone from being project assistant at Small Green Shoots, to Creative Team Assistant at Atlantic Records. Rebecca originally studied law at university, but after working at Small Green Shoots she is pursuing a career in music law. Whilst Vic, who is also a public speaker, spoke about what it means to be yourself and staying true to your identity within the music industry.
After the Small Green Shoots panel, we had a series of performances. We welcomed on stage Tileyard Alumni Tia Degannes and Tana, as well as Nest Programme participants Harry Mac and Alice Heather. Plus, what makes our events at Tileyard even more special, is that we involve our current students. For current students African Fanta and Ayooniks, this was their first time performing in a space like this.
The event was a fantastic opportunity for guests and audience members to network and come together as a community, whilst celebrating the richness and power of Black History Month.
