Relationships from the Music Business Summer Camp

go back

This summer (2024), Conrad Pope joined Tileyard’s Music Business Summer Camp. He went in as someone wanting to learn more about the music industry, and came out with the opportunity for new business partnerships.

Having worked in and around music previously, ranging from an internship at a record label in Paris to running a music TV show, Conrad was no stranger to the industry. However, he found himself at a crossroads, seeking a new direction that combined his passion for music with his growing interest in visual storytelling. The camp at Tileyard seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore these different paths and meet like-minded individuals.

Gaining Deeper Insights

Though Conrad entered the camp with some industry knowledge, he came away with a deeper and more current understanding of key topics – particularly social media and its integration with platforms like Meta. He found it invaluable to update his skills in this area, reflecting on how the fast-evolving digital landscape impacts the music industry. Conrad also found music supervision to be a fascinating subject as he previously had an interest in it. Learning about the skills and techniques involved, from both the artist’s and producer’s perspectives, helped broaden his understanding and gave him a well-rounded view of everything.

Throughout the camp, Conrad shares that he carefully documented everything he learned, filling a small notebook over the course of just four weeks. He added, “The teaching style of the course was a dynamic mix of lectures with the feel of a seminar which I really liked”. He especially enjoyed the more interactive, task-oriented approach, which kept him actively involved in the learning process. The inclusive atmosphere, with diverse perspectives from both artists and industry professionals, enhanced his experience even further.

Forming Creative Bonds

During the first week of the camp, Conrad found himself chatting in the courtyard with fellow participants, including Harrison and Ishmael. He shares that, “The conversation flowed easily, and before long, we were spending evenings together after the camp, discussing creative ideas”. Conrad quickly became friends with Harrison, who was in the midst of planning a dance/day rave music event called “Dayshift.” The event was part of Harrison’s work with Leylines, a media company that integrates events and community-building into its core mission.

Creating an Advert

As Harrison and Conrad sat around Campfire after one of the lectures, Harrison shared his vision for an advert to promote the Dayshift event. He described a concept where people, stuck in their day jobs, longed to break free and dance the day away at a rave. The idea resonated with Conrad, and he immediately began brainstorming with Harrison.

With the help of some cinematographers, they turned the concept into a reality, creating the advert in just two and a half weeks! The set was even built in a friend’s living room, adding a personal touch to the production. The final product was ready 10 days before the event, capturing the spirit of Dayshift perfectly.

Engaging in Other Business Partnerships

Conrad’s involvement didn’t stop there. On the day of the event, he was on-site, helping with the setup and filming behind-the-scenes footage, ensuring that every moment was captured. The success of the advert and the event further solidified the bond between Conrad and his new friends.

Through these experiences, Conrad also connected with Ishmael, an artist manager who works with an Afrobeats artist. Impressed by Conrad’s work on the Dayshift advert, Ishmael invited him to collaborate on a music video for his artist. Conrad eagerly took on the role of producer, with Harrison stepping in as assistant director. They are now in the final stages of planning, with filming set to take place in the next couple of weeks, aiming for an early October release.

Desired Outcome

For Conrad, the Music Business Summer Camp at Tileyard was a catalyst for new friendships and collaborations. It reaffirmed his love for music and visual arts, and opened up exciting new pathways for his career.
