Tileyard Education runs numerous songwriting camps throughout the year to provide ample opportunities for our students to supercharge their careers with invaluable experiences, whilst expanding their networks and learning how to write collaboratively regardless of their genre, voice or style.
Our camps are an important exercise in taking writers out of their comfort zones to experience new perspectives and ideas. As part of undertaking a postgraduate degree at Tileyard Education, songwriting camps are embedded into the course.
Benefits for each genre
Every songwriter from the Tileyard online Summer 2020 songwriting camp signed at least one single song agreement with Ninja Tune; moreover, during our 2020 Marrakesh songwriting camp, 5 of the songs pitched to Sony Music were accepted to be added onto a Sony Music library.
Our songwriting camps are valuable for any artist, whether you are an aspiring musician discovering who you are and where you want to take your art, or if you are looking for new experiences to develop and collaborate with new connections or experiment with genre-blending.
Pop
Pop songwriting has progressively moved into a more collaborative direction, with some songs listing many songwriters as contributors. For instance, Beyoncé’s 2022 album Renaissance boasts a total of 73 songwriters. Although this is largely a result of the modern practices of sampling and interpolation, it highlights the importance of learning to collaborate with different combinations of writers and producers. This cross-pollination of creativity can be experienced through our songwriting camps and will prepare you for the professional world. Each of our songwriting camps provide you with four professionally mixed tracks by pro producers.
R&B
R&B is another rapidly changing genre, so it is imperative that artists decide on their desired influence, focus on meaningful lyrics that tell a story, and stay up to date with the culture. Taking part in songwriting camps and workshops provides the opportunity to develop a more accomplished technique and extensive vocabulary. By surrounding yourself with committed, compatible and complementary musicians you can discover valuable inspirations and widen your creative horizons.
House
Hannah Boleyn and James Grover from Tileyard Music attended our songwriting camp in Copenhagen hosted by GL Music and struck gold by creating the topline for ‘Coffee & A Coke’ by PS1, PBH & JACK, which gained 250k streams in its first week. The camp provided the perfect environment to stimulate artistic freedom to share, embrace and experiment with ideas, and receive constructive feedback.
Indie Rock
Different minds contribute different perspectives, styles and cultures; songwriting camps provide a superior platform for collaborations to attempt ideas from other angles. As long as there has been indie rock, songwriters have worked in their own band bubbles, but in recent years the genres’ most prolific names, including Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker who has contributed to albums by Lady Gaga, Rhianna and Kanye West. For indie artists, songwriting camps offer unparalleled possibilities, especially when searching for potential opportunities with artists of mutual inspirations.
Hip-Hop / Rap
The trend of co-writing is rooted in hip-hop, in which artists are more experimental and more inclined to take risks than any other genre. Many musicians within this industry have struggled to find their own identity due to a lack of UK influences. Tileyard’s Tarju Le’Sano shared his experiences and how he developed his eclectic style of music and developed his writing skills alongside our MA music production course.
