AI could pose a problem as people have been taking an artist’s voice and using it to cover an existing song by another artist using AI.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming more prominent in the digital world. From conducting research for writing essays, to getting lyric inspiration, AI has its benefits. However, there are some negatives to AI, like people using AI like ChatGPT to write songs.
One example of AI being used in music is an artificial Taylor Swift cover of the hit song Starboy by The Weeknd. The clip has gone viral on TikTok, garnering millions of views, likes, comments, and shares – ultimately causing some fans to become ‘concerned’ over the star’s career (as well as the future of the music industry itself). Could authenticity within the music industry be at risk?
Other AI covers include a fan-imagined mash-up duet of Harry Styles with Taylor Swift, on her hit song Cardigan. Although some may say that this is a great way of adding to fan culture and allowing fans to imagine the endless possibilities that come with AI, others think this could also pose a risk to the authenticity of songs in the future, as well as there being dangers around the stars themselves having their voices manipulated by AI.
Like any new technology, it’s important that people learn about the positives and negatives. As well as get an understanding on how to use the technology in an appropriate way. Or, for those in the music industry, how to use it to your advantage, whilst avoiding legal issues and copyright.
Here at Tileyard Education, we teach a number of MA and short courses, including MA Music Business. Two areas that we cover within this course are new technology and legal affairs. It’s important for any artist, whether well established or new and aspiring, to have a good understanding of current trends within the industry, as well as legalities surrounding subjects like AI and NFTs.
Due to unprecedented demand, we have expanded our deadline application date to the 31st July for our range of MA courses, including our Music Business course. Sound like something you could be interested in? Why not sign up for one of our open evenings and taster days, here, to get a feel for what life at Tileyard Education is like.
