This course is designed to teach ultimate beginners the basics of music production so students leave with a solid foundation to get them started on their musical career. Classes will be held one night per week, with each session lasting approximately 2 hours. The course will cover a range of topics including the fundamentals of music production, using Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), sound design, arranging, recording, tuning, mixing, and mastering.
This course will be taught by Veira, singer-songwriter, producer & engineer. She’s worked with Joshua Alamu as engineer/arranger for the Little Mix acoustic version of their single ‘Confetti’, and ‘Between Us’ at The Graham Norton Show, and worked alongside a wide range and number of artists such as Headie One, MckNasty (Wizkid, Tinie Tempah) and Jrocks (Stormzy) as a producer, writer and singer.
She handles every aspect of her music from the production right to the lyrics and performance. Having worked as a producer and an artist in her own right, Veira will be showing you everything she knows about music production so you can succeed in your career and work with heavy hitters like her.
COURSE BREAKDOWN
Week 1: Introduction to Music Production for Beginners
– Overview of the music production process.
– Introduction to different types of DAWs (e.g., Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio).
– Basic setup and configuration of a DAW (we will be using Logic)
– Introduction to MIDI and audio tracks.
Week 2: Understanding DAWs
– Introduction to MIDI instruments and plugins.
– Basic editing techniques.
Week 3: Sound Design Basics
– Introduction to synthesisers and samplers.
– Basic sound design principles (oscillators, filters, envelopes).
– Using presets and creating custom sounds.
Week 4: Arranging and Composition 1
– Music Theory – understanding basic scales, transposition, chord inversions and substitution of chords.
– Developing a chord progression.
Week 5: Arranging and Composition 2
– Song structure (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro).
– Techniques for building tension and release.
Week 6: Recording Techniques
– Microphone types and placement.
– Recording vocals and instruments.
– Understanding signal flow and gain staging.
Week 7: Tuning and Time Correction
– Introduction to pitch correction tools (e.g., Auto-Tune, Melodyne).
– Time correction techniques (quantisation).
– When and how to use tuning and timing correction.
Week 8: Mixing & Mastering Fundamentals
– Introduction to mixing principles (balance, panning, EQ, compression).
– Using effects (reverb, delay).
– Basic automation.
– Overview of the mastering process.
– Basic mastering techniques (EQ, compression, limiting).
– Preparing a track for release.
