MA DESIGN
SUBJECT TO VALIDATION

FOR ENTERTAINMENT AND NEW MEDIA DESIGNERS

The MA Design, taught in partnership with the acclaimed Design Laboratory and interaction design practice Kin, provides students aspiring to a career as creative industry designers with an unrivalled opportunity to harness creative, technical, business and industry-focused skills while learning from, collaborating and connecting directly with industry practitioners based at Tileyard London, the largest independent music community in Europe.

The MA Design will create highly strategic individuals that will able to apply their skills across many industries from digital branding strategy, design services to music/entertainment. The programme will provides students with an integrated and critically aware understanding of user-centric design methodology focused on digital, physical, creative strategies, platforms and techniques and an in-depth analysis of key stakeholder organisations in a global context.

Students also have year-round opportunities to design to live creative briefs as part of the in-house MA design agency. This industry-centric course also includes regular, large-scale industry networking events, a unique master class series featuring case study insights from many of the companies working with Tileyard, a one-to-one mentoring programme, work-based learning projects and access to the annual calendar of events held on-site at Tileyard.

Entry Requirements
Course Length: 12 months (full-time)
Start Date: January 2020

Normally, the possession of a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree, or an appropriate equivalent, i.e. a professional qualification, from a recognised British or overseas institution, in a design related subject.

Applicants who do not fully satisfy the general criteria will be considered if they are able to demonstrate that they are capable of successfully undertaking and completing the programme at the required standard. Eligibility will be determined by means of an interview with the admissions tutor and subject to confirmation with the Programme Director and final confirmation with the university.

Applicants who have been taught and assessed in languages other than English should have the English language equivalent to IELTS 6.0.

A non-honours undergraduate degree in a related subject from a UK university and relevant evidenced experience (normally equivalent to two years) or an equivalent certificated degree from a non-UK institution. Non-degree qualifications such as the Higher National Diploma or equivalent overseas qualifications, where the applicant has appropriate employment experience (normally equivalent to a minimum of three years)

Qualifications from relevant Professional Bodies, which are at a level below UK Honours Degree and relevant professional experience, (normally equivalent to a minimum of three years). Currently, this course is open to UK and EU students, and any international students not on Tier 4 visas.

About Kin

Kin is an interaction design practice. Our work is about using technology and research to make connections between people, information, spaces, and things. We are a team of designers, developers, makers, producers, and strategists based in London. We work on projects big and small for clients ranging from commercial businesses to cultural organisations. We have close links with education, and work regularly with academic institutions.

We believe that for design to be relevant and meaningful, it must be engaged with the world. Term 1: Foundation (60 credits)
+- The International Business of Design

Subject to Validation. This module enables students to appraise and evaluate both contemporary and key historical design-related businesses. Students will benefit from guest lectures and network opportunities with design agencies and practitioners. The module is intended to help the development of entrepreneurial, business initiation, management and funding skills in addition to contextualising the design business land-scape.

+- Design Technology

Subject to Validation. The Design Technology module develops competency with industry standard design tools, including the Adobe Creative Suite and website building applications in a workshop environment. Students will en-gage with live design briefs to encourage time management and best practice.

+- Design Philosophy

Subject to Validation. The module provides a critical evaluation and analysis of historical and contemporary designers, and their relationship with the social, political, Economic and technological landscape. The module will also focus on the sociological and psychological aspects of visual communication and key design Principles and ideas. Creative Design Theory will be delivered using cases studies, guest lectures, workshops and multimedia resources.

Term 2: Development (60 credits)
+- Digital Marketing

Subject to Validation. This module of study looks at the skills required to create, manage and evaluate marketing campaigns on and offline. Students will appraise essential marketing principles and critique their application within industry. The module also provides students with a range of digital tools required to deliver cutting-edge campaigns and an awareness of project and financial management. The module will include lectures and workshops run by industry practitioners.

+- Design Hack

Subject to Validation. Building on Design Technology, this module encourages students to explore new relationships between established design tools, technology and the physical world with an enterprising ‘hacker’ approach. In a design workshop environment, skills in coding and making will be taught with a focus on the interaction with the design’s intended audience.

+- Industry Placement

Subject to Validation. Students will complete an industry placement or internship relating to their area of interest or specialism. The placement will enable the students to examine contemporary working practices, business set-up and strategy in addition to expanding their network of contacts and personal portfolio of work. The industry placement is intended to assist the student’s development of a major design project.

Term 3: Creation (60 credits)
+- Creative Design Project

Subject to Validation. Drawing on the creative, technical, business and soft skills developed during the programme of study, students will produce a Creative Design Project. This autonomous module will encompass the final term of study. Students will receive personal supervision and mentorship and be encourage to collaborate with both the Tileyard and wider creative community to produce a substantial, inspired work.
