GAME AUDIO WITH FMOD AND UNITY

Game sound has come a long way since the bloops & bleeps of the 1980s. Gamers now expect fully immersive and interactivity to match the improvements in graphics and gameplay. Though there’s some overlap with film and TV sound, game sound designers need a unique set of skills. Sound effects and music need to be interactive, and respond to changes and events in the game.

This course will introduce you to the challenges involved, and teach you how to meet them. It will teach you not only how to create interactive audio, but also take you through making your own First Person Shooter, so you can create your sound and music, and see it working in-game.

The course is aimed at beginners with a background in music and film sound who wish to get involved in game audio, and will also be useful for designers who wish to learn more about creating and implementing sound effects for their own projects.

There’s also been a change in game creation software – all the tools you need are available for free, so there’s no software investment needed. If you have a reasonably up to date computer, you’ve already got everything you need to get started. We’ll be using a combination of Unity and FMOD, but the techniques we’ll be looking at can be applied to almost every game creation software.

There’s never been a better time to get started in Game Audio. There’s a real need for people who can design, create and implement sound effects, and this course will teach you how.

This Course will introduce the student to the principles and practice of Game Audio, through the process of creating your own First Person Shooter (FPS) game. The game will be made using the Unity game engine and FMOD audio middleware. Unity is a very popular engine with “indie” game designers. It also has the advantage of running reasonably well on medium spec computers (unlike its main rival, Unreal)

FMOD is an ideal introduction to game audio, as it is designed to look and behave in a way that will be familiar to anyone who’s used a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) before.

The main focus of this course is on Game Audio, and will also cover the basics of Game Development as well as giving a simple introduction to coding. This will not only give you a solid skill set in Game Audio, but also cover enough of the related areas to be able to put your work into practice.

There are dozens of courses on film sound and music production, but relatively few on Game Audio. This is somewhat surprising, as the games industry makes more revenue than film and music combined!

At the end of the weekend, you’ll be able to take away a playable game, complete with interactive sound and music.

About Ciaran

Ciarán is the author of Game Audio with FMOD and Unity (Focal Press, 2019). He has over 20 years’ experience in teaching Audio Production, and has developed and delivered degree courses for universities and colleges. Ciarán’s original background is in TV, film, music, and studio electronics, as well as working in in video production and editing. In recent years, he has worked in online education, where he developed courses on Game Audio, and collaborated with industry professionals to produce courses on Film Making and Visual Effects.
